About Madrid, Spain

Visiting the Spanish capital of Madrid means encountering a cultural center that has been evolving and transforming since medieval times. Palaces and sculptures dot the city’s landscape, and museums catalog every era of Spanish history for curious travelers. World-class cuisine, sporting destinations and night life are also on the agenda.

See the City in Your Rental Car

Travelers who want to see priceless artwork are spoiled for choice in Madrid. The Paseo del Arte is a short stretch of road that contains three world-class museums: the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía. The Prado names Goya, El Greco and Heironomous Bosch among its collected artists, the Thyssen-Bornemisza boasts a timeline of paintings going back 700 years and the Reina Sofía’s collection is headlined by Picasso’s Guernica.

When it’s time to eat, visitors will find Madrid is home to a distinct and ever-developing food culture: small plates, also known as tapas. While tapas began as a form of snack sold alongside drinks in bars, they have spent centuries becoming a unique form of cuisine. Top neighborhoods for tapas tasting include downtown Madrid, La Latina and Lavapiés.

Visitors looking for a night out on the town can take many possible paths. They may stop in to see a Flamenco performance – Madrid is the central hub of this nationally significant art form – or dance in one of the numerous clubs throughout the city. Streets such as Calle Huertas in the Literary Quarter cater to all interests, with modern night spots open next to pubs that have existed for hundreds of years.

Enjoy the Region

Going beyond the Madrid city limits opens up new vistas for curious travelers. For instance, the palaces and gardens of Aranjuez offer a view of the way monarchs have lived through the years. This town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with grounds based on France’s legendary Versailles and meant to create the feeling that the outdoor features are a full-fledged room of the palace.

Another World Heritage Site near Madrid is Alcalá de Henares. The city is home of Complutense University, founded in 1499 and a significant place in the development of the Spanish language. It is connected with the Magisterial Cathedral, 1 of only 2 of its kind in the world. You’ll also want to see the museum established in the former home of legendary scribe Miguel de Cervantes, as well as the Regional Archeological Museum.

There’s so much to discover in and around Madrid that one visit may not be enough to take it all in.
